Keeping tenses correct

I have a sentence here and I'm wondering if I can write it the way it is, because I know I forget the rules :

"Having reflected for years upon patterns in my life, I can say with confidence now that the difficulty of writing those papers and the task of writing this letter had to do with knowing that there was more than one aspect to focus on."
Could it be better structured?

Reflecting upon patterns in my life, I can now say with confidence that knowing there is always more than one aspect to every issue makes writing papers and this letter a difficult task.
