Keep shape/in shape

Could you explain to me what the difference is between 'keep shape' and 'keep in shape' in term of meaning or nuance? Thank you in advance.

"I like to keep in shape." is what you'd hear (in the US) - that is, the person works out and watches what he eats.


"I like to keep shape." is ungrammatical.
