"Keep mum" vs "keep silent"

Hi there, is there any difference in meaning between 'keep mum' and 'keep silent' in the following sentence?

1- I don't like Peter at all. He is a perfect example of a hypocrite. When John was behaving rudely with me he kept mum.

2- I don't like Peter at all. He is a perfect example of a hypocrite. When John was behaving rudely with me he kept silent.
