Keep & keep on

Can you use "keep walking" with the same meaning as "keep on walking" in the example below? If so, don't you think that the "on" after "kept" is not necessary?

Janice decided to walk five miles for exercise. After she reached the five-mile mark, she KEPT ON
WALKING.
