Keep in touch or keep updated

In the last part of the following sentence, what I wanted to express is that people could watch news through the media. I would really appreciate it if someone could let me know which of the following phrases is appropriate - "keep in touch with the world" or "keep updated with the world"


Under such circumstances, the media not only assist corporations in promoting their products and services, but it also provides a window of opportunities for the general public to keep in touch / keep updated with the world.
