Keep diet or keep a diet

Hello!

Which one is correct in imperative: Keep diet. or Keep a diet.

Also does this phrase imply that the person should keep healthy diet? Or I should specify?

Isn't it more correct to say ' go on a diet '? And that keep is only used if you want to say 's tick/keep to your diet'?

I think "go on a diet" sounds rather colloquial. I need a phrase that would be appropriate for medical writing. :-)
