Here is the conversation between my friend, who is a native speaker of English and me:
Vince: How are you.. do you work every day teaching ?
Me: I don't work at all, I just spend great time with my friends here... It seems I will continue doing so till my money becomes tight!
Vince: HaHa. . . But you can decide now and keep ahead of debt.
I know that keep ahead of means 'to react quickly so that you can gain or keep an advantage' ; but I don't know what does ''keeping ahead of debt'' actually mean? Can you please help me understand it?

He meant to say that if you start working now, you can avoid debt. I'm not sure that 'keep ahead of' is used accurately there.

Thank you Mr Micawber, if I may be allowed now, can I push you for an answer? What would be the phrasel verb that you use in this context to convey the meaning avoid debt instead of keep ahead of debt one? Thank you
