Vocabulary

Karen

I'm reading a novel and there's a sentence: it was the third sultry July day in a row, already christened a heatwave by the papers but novel enough for her look forward to passing through each slant of sunlight on the shaded path ahead.' What's the meaning of "papers" "novels"?

Thanks!!
