You're right, but I didn't know that until I got to Maryland. I live about 20 miles from Taneytown, Md., and since that is mentioned some times on the radio and tv, that's how I learned the pronunciation.

So I learned something. I've always pronounced it with a soft g because a friend whose name ends in -nger pronounces his name with a soft g. But his name is (I think) of French origin while Basinger is what? German?
