Just how able they are we will soon find out.

Hi

Could you please tell me if we need a comma after are? Or is it optional? Also, what kind of phrase is 'just how able they are'? Noun phrase?

Just how able they are we will soon find out.

Thanks,

Tom

Could you please tell me if we need a comma after are ? I would put a comma. The word order is more effective if the speaker (or reader) pauses briefly at that point to consider what has just been said.

Just how able they are, we will soon find out.

A comma after are is preferable.

Just how able they are is a subordinate interrogative clause (embedded question) functioning as complement to find out.

Note that the interrogative clause is preposed to the front of the sentence (cf. the basic order We will soon find out
