Just grammar

Allama Iqbal wanted a separate state for Muslims because he thought Muslims and Hindus were/are two separate nations. Therefore, they could not live together as one nation. He thought only in their own homeland, Muslims would have freedom of thought and expression.

Please I need your feedback on grammar of these lines.
