Just a question on a sentence Ive come across.

0 Hey dudes, Ive come across this sentence in the newspapers and Im not 100% sure about its meaning.02br
02br
00So here is it (it is about an ageing but experienced ex-politician returning back to the scene)02br
02br
00" Nevertheless, he has decided that age is no barrier in taking on new challenges, and they don't come more daunting than setting up a new opposition party. 02br
02br
00My question is that whether "they" in this sentence refers to the "new challenges" and if that is so, is the sentence trying to say that these new challenges are less discouraging than having to set up a new opposition party?02br
02br
00Thanks in advance dudes!02br
