0 I think "I promised a friend (that) I would help repair her computer" is better. For some reaon that I can't quite explain, a putting "a friend" in between "I promised..." and "..to help" strikes me as odd. "I promised to help a friend repair her computer" is also possible, -- although in this wording it is not absolutely clear that the promise was made to the same person that has the comp
