Vocabulary

Jury-rigged

"The survivors used jury-rigged fishing gear".

Could you please explain to me what the emboldened parts mean here? I have no more context though.

I guess "fishing gear" means a cloth worn by fisherman while going for fishing.

Also jerry-rigged, by the way.

Hi Jim,

Really? I've never heard 'jerry-rigged'.

Is it possible you are thinking of 'jerry-built' (which suggests poor quality, poor workmanship)?

No. www.m-w.com does relate the two, however, believing jerry-rigged (the term I've heard all my life -- not jury-rigged!) to be a combination of jerry-built and jury-rigged.

Hi guys. Can "botch-up" substitute for "jerry-rigged"? Though, "jerry-rigged" I like more. Emotion: smile

Hi,

I've never heard that in such a context, and it doesn't sound right to me.

Have a look at 'lash-up', which stresses temporary improvisation.
