jungle-up

Hello,

what does the word "jungle-up" mean ? :

There is a path through the willows and among the sycamores, a path beaten hard by boys coming down from the ranches to swim in the deep pool, and beaten hard by tramps who came wearily from the highway in the evening to jungle-up near water.
(John Steinbeck, beginning of Of mice and men)

I haven't found it in any dictionary. Thank you for any help...

"The common meeting ground of both hoboes and tramps was the "jungle". The jungle was a campsite, usually located outside of town near the railroad tracks. The jungle was a place where everyone was welcomed as long as they obeyed the rules. In the jungle, there was food, a place to sleep, and companionship."
