jump to attention

Would it be correct to say "The soldiers jumped to attention when the general approached them."? Can we use jump if the soldiers are sitting?

Top answer

"Attention" is a formal military posture in response to the command of the same name. It requies standing straight, arms to the side, face forward, and more. " "Jump to attention" is fine, but you would use it only for soldiers who were sitting before the general came in.
