Could someone explain this expression? Thanks.

There was a successful TV show called 'Happy Days". It was about the everyday lives of a group of teenagers. After many episodes, there was a show in which one of the characters actually had to jump over a shark as a stunt. All the critics and viewers saw this as an indication that the show's writers had finally run out of intel
