Hello everyone. Please let me know which choice is correct and why?

1. There was some evidence that the thieves had jumped over the wall - footprints perhaps, 4. They were in the process of jumping over.. Both seem legitimate to me, or do you think I am reading too much into it?

The test-makers want 2. They would have put "that" after "saw" if they wanted to signal that more than one answer was possible, such as 1, 3, and 4.

You are probably tight, CJ. However, as 1 and 4 would be acceptable without 'that', I think it's a bad question.

But I take the point that I should be cautious when commenting on what are clearly exam or test questions. I am a native speaker and experienced writer but not a teacher.

I am a teacher, and form teacher trainer and UCLES and IELTS examiner. I agree with your original response.

If a response that an educated native speaker might give is considered incorrect, then we have a bad exercise.
