What is the difference between jug and pitcher?

I was drinking with some British guys at a beach in the Philippines and one guy called up the waiter and said " Can we have another jug of this? " . I was so scared that 'we would have to down a barrel of the liquor' but the Filipino waiter came with a 'pitcher'.
