Joyful vs joyous

what is the difference between these two adjectives. joyful and joyous

Which one fits better in the following context.

Suddenly I heard the voice of a woman, crying, not out of sadness, but it appeared to me as if she was joyous/joyful.

Either one works in your example. I'm unable to give you a clear difference, or to think of a case where we could use one and not the other. Maybe later.

Clearly, "joyful" seems a more appropriate choice to describe a person's emotional state while "joyous" fits better when describing an occasion.
Examples: Mr. Daniel is a joyful man / It is a joyous celebration
