Joke : masculine or feminine ?

Good morning,
I would like to know if "joke" is feminine or masculine in the expression "private joke"
I think it's masculine, but other french people say the contrary

Thanks for your answer

In English it's neuter in the sense that the pronoun "it" would be used to refer to it after its first mention.

  • In French you have your choice, but I kind of like "La" in "La Joke" (as in "La Poste".
  • But "le" has its charm in referring to jocularity, as in "du joke".
