Hi,

'The housewife involved herself in a hobby (collecting stamps) to get rid of boredom.'

Could we use 'take part in', 'participate in' and 'join' instead of 'involve himself in' here?

Thanks a lot.

You can "take up" a hobby. Participate in and join don't really work here.

Hi GG,

Thank you very much for your reply.
Do you mean 'take part in' and involve oneself in' can work and have the same meaning as 'take up' here?

Thank you very much.

Hi,

'Take part in' and 'involve oneself in' suggest activities with at least some potential for contact with other people., eg amateur theatrics, singing in a group.

'Take up' does not suggest this. Thus, you can take up stamp collecting or painting as solitary occupations.

Best wishes, Clive

Hi Clive,

Many thanks to your clear explanation. If the 'hobby' in the sentence means doing something with other people such as singing in a group, 'involve onself in', 'take part in', 'join' and 'participate in' can work here? Could you please give me some advice about this?

Thank you very much.

Yes. Although it wouldn't be surprising to hear 'take up' either. We don't always choose our words with great care.

Actually, I think you'd more commonly hear some other way of saying it, eg

I've started playing baseball.

I'm doing Tai Chi at the gym twice a week now

I've joined a choir.
