Joint first prize

Hi.

What does joint mean in the following sentence?

He won joint first prize in a TV contest.

My impression is that, joint prize indicates that they were two or more people who won the first prize.

Am I right?

Thanks in advance for your time and help

Thanks Siavash for letting me know that I can look it up in dictionary. I couldn't think of that. You are a life saver.

The position of being first is shared but not neccessarily the prize.

As Jim said whether the prize is divided or not remains ambiguous.
