Joining with a clause

Hello,

Example: USA ceased to be the free nation that it had always been.

I am assuming that 'that' is necessary here to connect the two clauses? Is that so, or can one do without it?

Top answer

'That' is not necessary there. 'The', however, is: ' The USA'.
