Joining two sentences / clauses

Hi,
I always have this problem when I have to combine two sentences /clauses. Consider the following three versions of a thought. I understand that ‘sometimes I get confused' is one complete sentence as it can stand on its own. The second part ‘to recognize if a word is a long or short vowel' is an adverb clause. The following are three ways I could think of. Are they correct? Are there any other better options?

1. Sometimes I get confused as to if a word is a short vowel or a long vowel.

2. Sometimes I get confused with recognizing if a word is a short or long vowel.

3. Sometimes I get confused when I try to recognize if a word is a short or a long vowel.

Thanks,
MG.
