Joining sentences - When

Can I use "When" at the beginning to join two sentences?
Example:
I was picking my things for the trip.
They came to fetch me.
When I was picking my things for the trip, they came to fetch me.

I was reading a book.
I heard a loud crash from the back of the house.
When I was reading a book, I heard a loud crash from the back of the house.
