joining multiple independent clauses

Does the following sentence have valid grammar?

"In half an hour, Bobby hit 200 tennis balls, Alice hit 400 tennis balls, Jimmy hit 30 tennis balls, and Betty hit 70 tennis balls."

Why doesn't it count as a run-on or a comma splice? Alice isn't a robot, she just has mad skills, her biceps are like tree trunks, and her first baby rattle was a tennis racket.

Because, as I understand it, a series of independent clauses can be listed in what St.Martin's Handbook calls a "cumulative sentence." But I might be wrong.
