Join in Malaysian life?

I threw my magazine into the waste basket and decided to join in Malaysian life. Then everything came alive. The mountains seemed to speak to me. Even the trees were smiling. I stared at everything as if I was looking at it for the first time.

I find "join in Malaysian life" incorrect, because you can "join in" a game, the fun or other activities but you can't join in some kind of life. I think here we'd better off saying "join Malaysian life". Is that OK?
What do you think of it?
Thank you.

OK. I see. Thank you.
Then can I say "join Malaysian life" or " live Malaysian life", since you can also "join an activity " ?
