John's vs John is

After quickly trying to "google" this question, I failed to find a clear answer on this method.

Is it proper to use an 's when saying "<noun> is" ?

For instance, "John's back"; does this refer to a man named John's back, or is it stating that John is back?

Or is it of interchangable use?
