Grammar

( John was taking the test when the bell was ringing.- Is this sentence correct and logical? What do you think guys?

Guys, I reall need your help on this matter.

I need to verify if the sentence aforementioned in this topic is grammatically correct and logical at the same time because we just had a test on progressive and and perfect tenses and one of the items there went this way:

Rewrite it in it's past progressive form.

* John( take) the test when the bell ( ring).

Although I should supposedly have answered this way: John was taking the test when the bell rang.,

I unknowingly answered: John was taking the test when the bell was ringing.

Guys, I think it's not a mistake.

I still genuinely believe that it could also be an answer. It could also be right.

So I really really need your advice guys.

Please help me as soon as possible guys!

Your efforts will surely be appreciated!

Thanks guys!

Something like the sentence below would make more sense because t

Hi,

That's the problem with lots of these test questions.

ie How do you mark an answer that is not grammatically incorrect, but which is unnatural and requires some unlikely context?

bar9on, Thanks sir!

Maybe it would be better when it went this way:

When John was taking the exam, the bell was ringing so he didn't...or... so he was not able to.. or... so he couldn't hear really hear what I was telling him.

What do you think?

another example:

John was taking the exam when the bell was ringing so I he didn't hear me as I was laughin
