John Kerry's pronunciation of "America"

I've heard John Kerry pronounce the word "America" (a'm3:rik&) (& ==> schwa), never (a'mErik&); with the same sound of "fur" and "murder", not with the sound of "very" which, I presume, he pronounces ('v3:ri) and "merry". Is it correct or common to do that in American English?

"Gli americani sono ignoranti per loro stessa natura" that is "The Americans are naturally ignorant"

I can understand the possibility that you may have been living under a rock
40 years ago, but surely you've at least heard of Google?

Oddly enough, I hadn't even been born 40 years ago, but you have a point about Google. Lyndon Johnson?

Bingo! Now do "Nelly", and then "Chingy" the people you asked about in your previous post.

Why do I not think Kerry wants to sound like a rapper?

It's certainly common. I've always supposed it (at least, the corresponding pronunciation of "American") to be the reason for the term "Merkin"
