John felt nervous and stammered out, "F-F-for-g-give me."

Is "out" in the above optional? If not, what does it mean? Thanks.

I think optional, but I think I would cut it as redundant. The 'out' does add to the volume of the utterance, but I think that in this case 'stammered' is quite enough.
