John caught up this and succeed at asking a lovely girl out for dinner

My student wrote:

My suggetion:

It's quite popular to make friends on the Internet these days. John made use of/seized/cashed in on this chance and succeeded in asking a lovely girl out for dinner.

Correct me if I am wrong. Thanks.
