Job protections

Can you please explain "protections" in other words? I've checked online and still don't get its meaning. Thanks.

We usually say job protection , not job protections. Broadly speaking, the union forced Marriott to agree to procedures and agreements that prevented Marriot management from arbitrarily dismissing employees from their jobs. Clive
