Japan's southernmost prefecture/county/province

Okinawa, once the Ryukyu Kingdom, is Japan's southernmost prefecture. It has a long history and a unique culture that is quite different from the rest of Japan.

Hi,

Does "prefecture" in the above equal "county" or "province" to you? Thanks.

Prefecture is the word accepted by English writers for Japanese ' ken / to / do / fu '. For Americans, it is closer to 'state' and for Canadians it is similar to 'province'; I imagine that Brits will equate it with 'county'. South Korea is divided into nine do (provinces).
