"Japan Times" online article

A Westerner who translates from Japanese to English says he prepares by having native speakers prepare an "under-translation" for him. Does anyone know what that term means?

Hi, I've never heard that, but it sounds like it means 'a rough translation', ie an approximate one. Clive

This might mean not to translate everything. Or he may wants incomplete translation but im not sure maybe he means the other way around...cheers!
