Jane Austen's "Persuasion", "Northanger Abbey", & "Mansfield Park"

I've just watched the latest adaptation of Persuasion, and am quite disappointed. Nothing in the story explains why the heroine is worth falling in love with all over again. And they've made this supposedly elegant Anne Elliot run all over Bath for her lover! Good grief, this is supposed to be 19th century, not the 21st!

Watched Northanger Abbey last night. This is not bad at all. Catherine Morland is about how I imagined her to be, and overall the production has captured the tone of the story.

I heard that the uncut version is even better, so I'm waiting for this to come out on DVD (region 1).

ETA: The 1986 version of NA wasn't very well done, so this version compares quite well with the last o

I haven't been watching this series, but I did read that when they get to Pride and Prejudice they are going to re-use the 6-hour BBC version with Colin Firth. It is WONDERFUL and very faithful to the book -- I can really only think of two scenes that are not in the book, and another line or two. (One of the "extra" lines is actually my favorite line in the whole thing!) Be sure to catch that

Not a big fan of Jane Austen. Never read any of her works. But I saw the old version "Pride and Prejudice", not the new one though. I quite frankly like the movie very much. And there is something I cannot forget what is in it. I probably check out the book later in the year. If I like the book, I will probably read her another novel Mansfield Park.

Difficult to be or not be a fan of a writer if you have never read any book by that writer!

I would start with Sense and Sensibility.

What about people who know her works from movies or mini-series or others? It is not as if I were ignorant about her work. On the contrary, I know about her stuff through other mediums.

The adaptations can be quite different from the novels. Take, Emma, for instance. I've watched three versions of Emma, and the 1972 version follows the book most closely, I believe.

It doesnt matter that there are something different. What drew me to hers is the general things, which is transformed into motion pictures. For instance, the things that I like about Pride and Prejudice is that Eliz's mother worrying about her daughters future. How can anyone forget that if you see it? The Bennett have four daughters and their estate would be taken over by their nephew be
