Jail vs prison

Is there a difference between 'jail' and 'prison' in British English like in American English?

Thanks!

No. By the way, the traditional British spelling was "gaol", but this is now rather uncommon. Most people now spell it "jail".

One difference is that in BrE jail is just another word for prison. In AmE it also refers to the separate jail system of keeping people in custody before conviction or release, but separately from prisons.
