Jagged links stripping at their skin

Hi

Two guys were led to their cell in prison.

They were pushed in, the shackles removed, the jagged links stripping at their skin, and then the door slammed shut and was loudly bolted behind them.

I don't understand that bolded part?

Top answer

I take "links" to mean the chain from the shackles. "Stripping" = cutting off pieces from the surface.

Hi

So it means that the jagged chains (from the shackles) were taken off their hands or not?

Without further context it is hard to tell more, but judging the sentence at hand I would say they're unshackled and the part with "..stripping..." doesn't make much sense to me.

I would say that the chains did damage while the shackles were being carelessly (or violently) removed.
