Ivory bone folder

Hi:

What is the exact meaning of "ivory bone folder" in the following passage?

The porcelain inkpot, the reed pen, a reed knife, an ivory bone folder, a whetstone to sharpen the knife, the razor to cut the paper, a pincer to hold it so that it does not move, an ivory spoon to pour ink into water, when it has become too thick.

Thanks very much.

A bone folder is a tool used in origami (and other similar endeavors) to make sharp creases. It is a polished, tapered, flattish stick of bone that slides smoothly over the paper or other material without marring it. This one is made of ivory.

  • I pronounce it "bone FOLder" because a "BONE folder" would fold bones, and nobody wants that.
