I'm a native speaker with an above average vocabulary. I can't speak for all native English speakers, but I frequently look up words in the dictionary. Occasionally it's because its a word I don't know, but more often I just want to confirm my understanding of the meaning and use of the word, or I'm curious to see how the editors of the dictionary chose to define it.

  • If it's a word I don't know it is probably one that very few people would know, and the dictionary definition will use simpler, more widely known words to define it.
  • If there were any words in the definition I didn't know I'd look them up too, and learn even more words.
