Hi,

You're talking about the past, but because it's important in the present situation.

A: My ***, the pilot is dead! Can of you fly a plane?

I've played tennis twice.
I've been to London twice

In both instances, you can add "so far in my life"

As to the "xx people who have died", you can also add "so far", meaning some may still be in a critical condition.
