I've messed it up. Help!

Hello!

Would you please translate the sentence below into English? What is the natural way to convey the following meaning?

''When I look at this photo of yours, it seems to me there is arguably no other face where sorrow ( or sombreness? / dreariness? ) can suit you more ( or as much as yours? ) ''

Top answer

I am unable to express those thoughts that I wish to express in natural English. So I would be grateful if you could rewrite the sentence completely.

It's not totally clear to me what you are trying to say. You may mean something like this:

''When I look at this photo of yours, it seems to me that there is no face better suited to sorrow/sombreness/dreariness."

"sorrow", "sombreness" and "dreariness" mean different things; the choice will depend on exactly what you want to say.

BAYRAM ERDEMno other face
Everyone has only one face, so to say something that implies that the person might have another face (where sorrow suits him less) is probably not what you want.

I don't quite grasp either what you mean by saying of a person that sorrow suits him. "You look good when you look sorrowful?" That's a rather strange thing to say

CalifJimTo judge by this photo, your face is (arguably) better (suited) than anyone else's at expressing sorrow.
Yes, sometimes it's like that. When I served in the Navy, there was an officer with a sort of "sad" face. So, every time when there was a military funeral, the commander sent him there to represent our unit.
