I’ve correctly used ‘as’ in the sentence, haven’t I? Should I say ‘as she read’ or ‘as she was reading’?

I saw Jacky sitting on a brown blanket (as she read / as she was reading) a book.

As she read would be better here. As she was reading a book would normally be taken to mean because she was reading a book . I would write I saw Jacky sitting on a brown blanket reading a book .

As she read would be better here. As she was reading a book would normally be taken to mean because she was reading a book.
