I've been reading a joint payed up

I've been reading a joint payed up. Never judge a book by its cover.

Hi.

Buzz Buzzard said the above when Scavenger Ama host, Junkyard Jim annouced the second clue--never judge a blank by its cover. What does "reading a joint" mean? Besides, I think it should be "paid off" rather than "payed up," right? Thanks.

I think I heard Buzz say "all that time I had for reading in the joint really paid off". "The Joint" is slang for prison. Buzz spent time in prison.
