its vs it's, todays vs today;s

ok so I got kind of mixed up between 's' and ''s'. I take as the rule of thum that 's' is posessive and ''s' is a form of 'it is':

>its achievements
<it's done

but when I encountered a situation regarding the word 'today' i suddenly felt less convinced:

>today's match
>today's not good

the question: why 'today's match' if it's posessive?

thank you!

John's book; Mary's dress; today's lesson.
John's tired. Mary's going with us. Today's not good.

All contractions use the apostrophe:

Today's (today is) not good. Don't ask. We'll go tomorrow.

Most possessives use 's:

John's hat, the cat's tail, today's game (the game happening today, belonging to today) ...

Most pronouns have special possessive forms:

I, we -- my, o
