Its? verb word or not

I was wondering if "its" is a verb word so I can use it in a sentence, for example I went to the park and I saw a river but there its a thing that are moving in the river. I use a word "it" which mean we don't know if it a boy or girl.

The contraction "it's" means "it is," so the contraction contains a verb.

The pronoun "it," is the neuter singular third person personal pronoun, so the following is correct:

"I saw something in the water, but I didn't know what it was."

As opposed to

"I saw a girl in the water, but I didn't know who she was."
