It's the look of it that bugs me.

M : I don't like my car.

W: Why, it's never given you any trouble.

M : Not mechanically. It's the look of it that bugs me.

If I replace the underlined part with The look of it bugs me, does it not sound OK and simple?

Yes, that it would be ok to simply say, "The look of it bugs me." Both are correct. I would probably say, "I don't like the look of it." or "I don't like the way it looks." (the last one is a little ambiguous, because it could be that the car car 'see'... people often make jokes out of this kind of sentence construction).
