Some people believe that all children should have a pet or an animal to look after. Other
people disagree, however, saying that this depends on a child’s circumstances. Consider these opposing
views, and give your own opinion.
It is believed that pets play an important role in affecting children’s development; thus, children are suggested owning a pet to take care for. While I understand that critics’ view is not to apply for all children but depending on some certain situations of a child, I believe that a recommendation of having a pet is considered as a better option since the benefits of growing up with pets still far outweigh the drawbacks.
On the one hand, there are two main reasons why people might disapprove of the suggestion that all children should have a pet to look after. The first objection is some families cannot afford a pet for their children due to financial difficulty. In specific, raising a pet requires a huge amount of money, which might hurt one’s budget significantly. For example, according to the recent research, the annual expense for a dog owner is above 1,200 USD due to food and veterinary care. The other argument is that having pets also have some drawbacks for children. In such a circumstance, a child spends so much time with their furry hair that they do not have friends at school. This was indicated by a research conducted by Harvard Business Review, which illustrated that when a kid puts all his/her focus on a pet, they do not see the necessity of making friends.
However, I would also argue that having pets, especially for children, are still beneficial and necessary in almost circumstances. In specific, pets support the full development of a child, both mental and physical development. Studies show that pets are able to guide children emotional adjustments and relationship enhancement. For instance, a child knows how to make friends, respect their friends, and maintain their relationship since he/she already has this “experience”, which is a strong bond between him/her and a pet. Besides, playing with pets fosters children’s physical growth, which fulfills the total development of a child. Particularly, thanks to the playtime between children and their pets supports some physical changes such as height and muscles.
Although there might be some critical opinions for all children having pets, from the argument mentioned above, I still believe that children should once have pets to grow up with.
