It's only I or It's only me

Hi!

I'd like to know which one would be the proper grammar:

1. Don't get up up! It's only I!

or

2. Don't get up! It's only me!

One of my English books tells me to use "It's only I", which would make

sense to me but I've never heard people saying it like that.

They all seem to use: it's just me or it's only me.

I'm confused about that.

Thank you!

  • People use 'it's me' in colloquial language, but I don't think it's correct.

For a long time, people insisted English should follow rules you find in Latin. They insisted that "It is I!" is correct.

Absolutely NO ONE I have ever heard in my 44 years of life has ever said "It is I" except in books set more than 100 years ago.

Grammar GeekIf the sentence continues - It is I who first said that... you have another situation, but if you knock on the door and someone asks "Who is it?" and you answer "It is only I!" you will be thought most strange.
This is the same example that's given in Oxford Language Reference. And I don't think it's a 100 year old edition

"It's only I" is correct but "it's only me" is so widespread among native speakers that people generally think this is acceptable usage. And I don't object to that (on the contrary).

This becomes evident in the following example

The players were Rob, Mark and I. (...Rob, Mark and me)

Now reverse the sentence

Rob, Mark and I were the players.

Eh, it's not such a secret. I was already on the forums when I turned 40 and it was mentioned then.

Good point about the Rob, Mark and me.

It's not just following what you suppose are the "rules you find in Latin." In German you would say "ich" (I), not "mich" Emotion: it wasnt me.
